Emigration..

..from the little village Kemme, near Hildesheim & Hannover in Germany .... to North Amerika

The reasons for the Roffmann-Families to emigrate ..
..the poor families have had no chances to own land. The only original farm in Kemme (since 1650) could only feed one familiy - not the more than 6 Roffmann-Families at the time 1840 to 1880. Most of them were day labourer or manual worker with a small income. The land reform in that region around 1835 made the common land, which could used by the whole Kemmer community, privat. So the poor poeple lost the possibility to feed their very small livestock with fresh fodder. The poorer poeple at that time were simply hungry. And they had no chance to change it, at that time in that region or environment. And if they want to do something, they always needed the permission of the administration.
At that time emigration became attractive. Special adverds tempted to emigrate to North America - more information about that issue, please click here . In the expectacency of  cheep land and a better future the Roffmann-Emigration starts at ca. 1849. The favourite states were Missouri and Illinois .
